West Godavari, AP Travel Guide: Top Sights & Tips

Bhimavaram In West Godavari Of Andhra Pradesh

Let me save you some confusion before you pack: the West Godavari on older maps and guidebooks is not the one you will be driving around today. Since 4 April 2022, Eluru has been a district of its own, and West Godavari is now headquartered at Bhimavaram. What you get is flat, green delta country that rewards slow travel: paddy fields stitched together with canals, fish and prawn farms, the broad Vasishta Godavari, a quiet Bay of Bengal coastline, two of the five Pancharama Shiva temples, and Narsapur’s GI-tagged crochet lace. It is not a tick-the-box destination. It suits anyone who likes a temple at dawn, a fish curry at lunch and long drives on straight, flat roads. Plan 2–3 days and use Bhimavaram as your base. I cross-checked distances, timings and prices against official pages, railway and airline listings and booking sites (as of October 2026). Temple hours, train timings and room rates do shift, so give them a quick re-check before you leave.

History

Forts In West Godavari Of Andhra Pradesh

Think of this as delta history. The Eastern Chalukyas ruled coastal Andhra from roughly 700 to 1200 CE from their capital at Vengi (near today’s Pedavegi, now in Eluru district). Their king Bhima is traditionally credited with the 9th-century Pancharama temples you will visit, and Bhimavaram is said to carry his name. The delta then passed through Kalinga and Gajapati hands, was taken by Krishnadevaraya in 1515, and later came under the Qutb Shahi sultans of Golconda.

The Europeans came for cloth and timber. The Portuguese set up a trading post in the 16th century, the Dutch reached Narsapur in 1626 and built ships there, and the English had a cloth factory at nearby Madhavayapalem (Madapollam). Under the Madras Presidency, Rajahmundry district was created in 1823 and reorganised in 1859. In 1925 the old Godavari district was split into East and West Godavari, with Eluru as West Godavari’s headquarters. On 4 April 2022 Eluru district was carved out and Bhimavaram took over as HQ; Ganapavaram mandal was added in February 2023.

Two more recent stories are worth knowing. Crochet lace arrived with missionaries in the 1800s and became Narsapur’s calling card; it received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2024. And on 31 December 2025 the temple town of Penugonda was officially renamed Vasavi Penugonda after the goddess said to have been born there.

Best Time to Visit

Sunset at Chinchinada Bridge In West Godavari Of Andhra Pradesh

Go between mid-November and February. Daytime highs sit around 29–31 °C, nights dip to about 20–22 °C, and rain is almost gone by December (India Meteorological Department figures for Narasapuram). That is ideal for temple circuits, beach mornings and long drives with the windows down.

Why This is the Best Time

October is the wettest month (roughly 245 mm over about 11 rainy days) and sits in the east coast’s cyclone season, so plans can get disrupted; check the IMD forecast if you travel then. From late November the skies clear and the lanes dry out. Migratory birds are at Kolleru between October and March. March–May turns hot (May highs average about 36 °C, with a record of 46 °C), and June–September brings the monsoon.

Festival timing matters. Maha Shivaratri (February/March) packs both Pancharama temples; Sankranti (mid-January) is lively and books hotels out; and the 12-yearly Godavari Pushkaralu is planned from 26 June 2027 according to recent Andhra Pradesh government statements (one district page lists late July, so confirm the dates). Narsapur is slated for a Pushkar ghat, so expect heavy crowds and high room rates, and book early or go another week.

Things to Do and See

1. Somarama (Someswara Janardhana Swamy) Temple, Bhimavaram

Start at one of the five Pancharama Shiva shrines, in Gunupudi near Bhimavaram’s bus stand (you can spot the gopuram from there). The lingam is said to change colour with the moon, dark around Amavasya and pale around Pournami. There is a lotus pond (Soma Gundam) outside and an Annapurna shrine above the sanctum, and the temple is a centrally protected monument. Timings are roughly 5 AM to 11 AM–12 noon and 4–8 PM (sources differ slightly; closed during eclipses). Entry is free. Allow 45–60 minutes, and pop into the Mavullamma temple, the town’s local goddess shrine.

2. Ksheerarama (Ksheera Ramalingeswara Swamy) Temple, Palakollu

Locals call it the “Pedda Gopuram”. The 9-tier tower is about 120 ft, one of the tallest temple towers in Andhra, and the mandapam has 72 black-stone pillars. The Chalukya king Bhima is credited with the 9th-century temple, and the gopuram was added in the 14th century. Timings: about 5:30–11:30 AM and 4–8:30 PM. Entry is free. It is 20–22 km from Bhimavaram and 1.7 km from Palakollu station, so pair it with Somarama in one day.

3. Vasavi Penugonda: Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari Temple

Known as the “Kasi of the Vysyas”, this is the birthplace of Goddess Vasavi, and the town carries her name officially since 31 December 2025. It is about 17 km from Palakollu, 20 km from Tanuku and roughly 25 km from Bhimavaram. Entry is free; temples keep morning and evening sessions, so go in the morning and confirm hours locally. Expect big crowds around Vasavi Jayanti.

4. Narsapur Riverfront and Old Town

Narsapur sits on the Vasishta Godavari and was once a shipbuilding port (the Dutch arrived in 1626). Walk the riverbank at sunrise or sunset, then see the roughly 300-year-old Adikesava Perumal (Emberumanar) temple. Taylor High School (founded 1852, with Dutch and British-era buildings, and where Alluri Sitarama Raju studied) is a working school, so admire it from outside unless you have permission. It is about 32 km (around an hour) from Bhimavaram and 79 km (around 2 hours) from Rajahmundry. Free.

5. Narsapur Crochet Lace and the Rustumbada Lace Park

This is West Godavari’s signature craft. Artisans (reportedly around 15,000 women across West Godavari and Konaseema) crochet doilies, table runners, cushion covers, stoles, tops and bags, and most of it is exported. Visit the Rustumbada Crochet Lace Park or a cooperative showroom in Narasapuram. I could not verify fixed public hours, so go on a weekday in daylight and call ahead. Prices vary: genuine hand-crochet costs more than machine lace, so ask which one you are buying.

6. Perupalem Beach (and Mollaparru)

A wide, quiet, coconut-lined Bay of Bengal beach in Mogalthur mandal, about 20 km from Narsapur and roughly 400 km from Hyderabad. Entry is free, there are no fixed hours (go in daylight) and resorts have come up nearby. Winter is best. Mollaparru Beach, about 22 km from Narsapur, is the quieter alternative. Swim only where locals do; Bay of Bengal currents can be strong.

7. Sunset at Chinchinada Bridge

The bridge over the Vasishta Godavari links West Godavari with the Konaseema side and is a good spot for golden-hour views of the river. It is about 13 km from the Dindi riverside resorts. It is a public road bridge, so it is free and always open; stop only where it is safe.

8. Antarvedi, Where the River Meets the Sea

Antarvedi, on the Konaseema side, is where the Vasishta Godavari meets the Bay of Bengal and is known for its Lakshmi Narasimha temple. It is about 10 km from Narsapur in a straight line, but the road is longer, so check the route on your map app. Go in the morning and carry cash.

9. Drive the Delta Loop: Bhimavaram, Palakollu, Narsapur

The best “attraction” is the countryside itself: paddy, canals and aquaculture ponds (the reason the local seafood is so good). A loop from Bhimavaram to Palakollu (about 22 km), on to Narsapur (about 15 km) and back (about 32 km) is around 70 km. Allow 2 hours of driving plus stops, and start early for soft light.

10. Temple-Hopping Off the Highway: Natha Rameswaram and Kallakuru

The district tourism list also names the Juthiga Rameswara Swamy temple at Natha Rameswaram (Penumantra mandal) and the Venkateswara Swamy temple at Kallakuru. Both are small village shrines, so ask locally for timings and the best road, and treat them as a bonus if you have a spare half day.

A simple 2-day plan: Day 1, Somarama around 6 AM, a fish-meals lunch in Bhimavaram, then Ksheerarama after it reopens at 4 PM. Day 2, lace shopping and the riverfront in Narsapur in the morning, then Perupalem Beach (20 km) for the afternoon, back before dark. Add a third day for Dwaraka Tirumala or Kolleru (see Nearby Attractions).

Food & Dining

Chepala Pulusu

Godavari-delta cooking runs on fresh river and estuary fish, prawns and heat. Chefs from the region point out that Godavari kitchens use ingredients such as white-sesame “telaga pindi” and make thick, dry-style “iguru” gravies, which set it apart from the rest of Andhra. Seafood is the star around Bhimavaram, thanks to its fish and prawn farms. Narsapur is also linked with pulasa, a prized seasonal estuarine fish that is best in the monsoon flood season and priced at a premium, so ask the price before you order.

Must-Try Local Dishes

  1. Chepala Pulusu – Fish in a tangy tamarind gravy; a Godavari staple, best made with local river fish.
  2. Royyala Vepudu – Dry-fried prawns with red chilli and curry leaves; a Bhimavaram favourite.
  3. Chepala Iguru – Fish “iguru”, a thick, dry-style curry that is typically Godavari.
  4. Natukodi Pulusu – Country-chicken curry in a spicy tamarind base, listed among Bhimavaram’s signature dishes.
  5. Gongura Mutton – Mutton cooked with sour sorrel leaves; Gongura Pachadi is the vegetarian chutney version.
  6. Bendakaya Pulusu / Dondakaya Vepudu – Okra in tamarind gravy and a dry ivy-gourd fry; good vegetarian choices.
  7. Pesarattu – A green-gram crepe, a classic Andhra breakfast, usually served with ginger chutney.
  8. Avakaya – Andhra’s signature mango pickle, made in summer and eaten all year.
  9. Bobbatlu – Sweet flatbread stuffed with jaggery and lentils, a festival favourite.
  10. Pootharekulu – Paper-thin rice-sheet sweets with jaggery or dry fruits (GI-tagged in 2023). They come from Atreyapuram in Konaseema, and boxes usually hold 10 pieces.

Vegetarians eat very well here (pesarattu, pulusu, pachadi and lots of sweets), but non-vegetarian dishes dominate the local specialities. For fish, pick a busy local restaurant over a quiet one; turnover means fresher food.

Shopping

Narsapur crochet lace

West Godavari is a low-key but genuine shopping region, built around crafts rather than malls. The star buy is Narsapur crochet lace (GI-tagged), and Palakollu is also known for handlooms and textiles. Browse the town markets in Bhimavaram, Palakollu and Narasapuram for sweets, pickles and fabrics. Fixed-price showrooms and cooperatives are the safer place for lace; at street stalls, ask what is hand-made and what is machine-made, and haggle politely. Pack items so they survive the journey, especially pickles and sweets.

Popular Things to Buy

  • Narsapur crochet lace – Doilies, table runners, cushion covers, bedspreads and wall hangings; this is the GI-tagged craft and the best souvenir.
  • Lace garments and accessories – Stoles, tops, caps and hand purses, made by artisans in Narsapur and nearby villages.
  • Handloom textiles – Look in Palakollu’s markets for handloom cotton and coloured-dye fabrics; ask about the weaver.
  • Pootharekulu – Atreyapuram’s GI-tagged rice-sheet sweet, sold in boxes of 10 in sweet shops across the region.
  • Avakaya and gongura pickles – Pack them well; check seals and ask for fresh batches.
  • Eluru woollen carpets – If you pass through Eluru (in the neighbouring district), it is known for wool-pile carpets and handwoven goods.
