Kakinada Travel Guide: Best Places, Food & Tips

Kakinada District In Andhra Pradesh

Let me be straight with you: Kakinada is not a polished resort town, and that is exactly why it rewards travellers who like real places. It is a working port city on the Bay of Bengal in the Godavari delta, with India’s second-largest mangrove stretch just down the road, a sand-spit island you reach by boat, old Shiva and Shakti temples within an hour’s drive, a loom village weaving feather-light Jamdani sarees, and a sweet shop that has been making the city’s signature Kaja since 1891. Come for two or three unhurried days, eat well, and let nature, temples and food carry the trip rather than nightlife.

A little context before you plan. Kakinada, the old “Cocanada”, is the sixth-largest city in Andhra Pradesh and one of the state’s three Smart Cities. Since 4 April 2022 it has been the headquarters of the newly formed Kakinada district, so an older guide that calls it the “East Godavari headquarters” is out of date (East Godavari’s HQ is now Rajahmundry). Here are the basics at a glance:

Quick fact Details
Where Godavari delta coast on the Bay of Bengal; headquarters of Kakinada district (formed 4 April 2022), Andhra Pradesh
Local language Telugu; English is generally understood at hotels and larger businesses
Nearest airport Rajahmundry (RJA) at Madhurapudi, about 60 km and 1.5–2 hours by road; domestic flights only
Railway Kakinada Town (CCT) and Kakinada Port (COA); the main-line junction Samalkot (SLO) is 12–15 km away
Best months December to February
Ideal stay 2–3 days; add a day if you want the temple circuit
Known for Kakinada Kaja, Coringa mangroves, Hope Island, Uppada Jamdani sarees

I compiled the distances, timings and prices below in October 2026 from official and operator sources. Where sources disagreed I have given a range, because timetables, fares and opening hours change and a quick confirmation before you set off saves a lot of grief.

History

Hope Island Kakinada District In Andhra Pradesh

Kakinada sits in the old Vengi country, where the Eastern Chalukyas held sway from roughly the 7th to the 12th century. Much later, European traders noticed the sheltered anchorage: the Dutch set up a trading post here in the 17th century, and the British East India Company came to know the town as “Cocanada”, a name tied to the first Canadian Baptist mission and used right up to Independence. When the older port at nearby Coringa silted up, trade shifted to Cocanada, and by 1902–03 the port ranked fifth in trade volume in the Madras Presidency.

In 1859 Cocanada became the headquarters of the Godavari district, which was renamed East Godavari in 1925. The Cocanada Port railway station goes back to 1882, so the rail link is far older than some guides claim. The modern chapter began when the Government of Andhra Pradesh commissioned the Kakinada Deep Water Port in November 1997; it was privatised in 1999 and is now run by Kakinada Seaports Ltd, with a channel about 12 metres deep. Since April 2022 Kakinada has headed its own district, and you can feel that mix of colonial port town and busy industrial hub as you move around the city.

Best Time to Visit

Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary Kakinada District In Andhra Pradesh

Plan your trip for December to February. That is when Kakinada is at its kindest: sunny and dry, with daytime highs around 29°C and nights of roughly 21–22°C. November and early March can also work, but the further you drift from that window, the more the weather starts making your decisions for you.

↔ Table scrolls sideways and up/down on small screens.

Season Months What to expect My verdict
Winter Dec–Feb Dry and sunny; highs around 29°C, lows 21–22°C Best. Book rooms early for weekends
Early summer Mar–Apr Dry but warming fast; April averages about 31°C Fine early on; plan outings for mornings and evenings
Peak summer May Hottest month; daytime highs around 36–37°C Avoid unless you must travel
Southwest monsoon Jun–Sep Humid with frequent showers Poor for boats and beaches, but rooms are cheaper
Northeast monsoon and cyclone season Oct–Nov (storm risk can linger into early Dec) October is usually the wettest month; Bay of Bengal storm risk peaks October–December Risky. Watch the IMD forecast and book flexible

Why This is the Best Time

Boats are the heart of a Kakinada trip, whether you are heading to Hope Island or creeping through the Coringa mangroves, and they are far more dependable when the Bay is not churned up by storms. Winter also brings migratory birds to the wetlands, makes sunrise walks and temple-hopping comfortable, and keeps you off the road in the worst of the heat.

One honest warning: the east coast’s cyclone season runs from about October to December, so “post-monsoon” does not mean safe. Cyclone Helen eroded Uppada Beach in 2013, a good reminder to check the forecast and keep bookings flexible if you travel in autumn. May is the hottest month, and June to September brings humid monsoon weather that is fine for budget rooms but not for boats and beaches.

Things to Do and See

Glass Bridge Kakinada District In Andhra Pradesh

1. Sunrise stroll on Kakinada Beach (and the glass bridge)

Kakinada Beach sits on the east side of the city, a short auto or cab ride (roughly 5–8 km) from the main commercial area. It is a promenade-and-shoreline beach rather than a resort strip, which is half its charm, and sunrise over the Bay of Bengal is the reason to come. Cross the creek on the roughly 45 m pedestrian suspension glass bridge built by AP Tourism (it sways a little, by design). Entry is free. Go at first light or in the late afternoon, and treat the sea as a paddling spot rather than a swimming spot, since currents can be strong.

2. Climb the Vakalapudi Lighthouse

About 10 km from the city centre by road (12 km from Kakinada Town station), this 45-metre red-and-white lighthouse near the port was commissioned on 8 November 2004, according to the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships. So it is a modern landmark, not the early-20th-century relic some older blogs describe. Parking, washrooms and a children’s play area are on site, and tickets are booked online through the lighthouse.nic.in e-ticket portal. Visiting hours are not listed on its page, so check the available slots when you book.

3. Take a boat to Hope Island

Hope Island is a sand spit about 16 km long that formed over roughly the last 200 years from Godavari sediment. It shields Kakinada Bay from storm surges, which is a big reason the port is considered one of the safest natural harbours on this coast. Boats leave from the Kakinada coast and the trip takes about 45–60 minutes each way. Godavari Point at the northern tip overlooks the mouth of the bay, and olive ridley turtles are reported to nest on the sands. There is almost nothing on the island, so carry water, snacks and sun protection, and do not plan an overnight stay. Fares and schedules are not fixed publicly, so confirm at the jetty and skip the trip if there is a weather warning.

4. Cruise the mangroves at Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary

Roughly 18–22 km from the city, Coringa protects the Godavari estuary mangroves, the second-largest stretch in India after the Sundarbans. The ecotourism area has a boardwalk and a jetty, and a boat ride through the creeks is the real prize: fishing cats, saltwater crocodiles, fiddler crabs and lots of waterbirds, with low tide giving the best chances. Hours are typically 9 AM–5 PM with one weekly closing day (reported as Tuesday for the sanctuary). Coringa Mangrove World, a free interpretation centre about 10 km south of the ecotourism spot, opens 10 AM–5 PM and is closed on Sundays. Entry is cheap (tens of rupees per adult, more for foreign visitors). Shared boat rides cost a few hundred rupees at most, while private boat safaris cost much more (one guide quotes around ₹5,000 a trip), so confirm at the counter. Go early, wear a hat, and carry water and snacks.

5. Visit Sri Bhavanarayana Swamy Temple, Sarpavaram

This Vishnu temple on the city’s edge is roughly 5 km from the centre and the easiest first temple stop if you have only an hour. Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, expect to leave your footwear outside, and check darshan timings locally: temples in this region commonly run from about 5 AM to 9 PM, often with a mid-day break.

6. Spend a morning at Uppada Beach and the weaving village

Uppada is about 15–20 km along the coastal road. The beach has a long, quiet shoreline and basic facilities, so expect roadside parking and few shops. The real draw is the village itself: around 3,000 looms in and around Uppada and neighbouring Kothapalli weave Jamdani sarees, which have GI protection and are Kakinada district’s “One District One Product”. Drop into a weavers’ cooperative and watch two weavers work one loom; a single saree can take anywhere from 10 to 60 days.

7. Pay respects at Pithapuram

About 20 km from Kakinada, Pithapuram is home to Padagaya Kshetram, counted among the Ashtadasa (18) Shakti Peethas, and the Kukkuteswara Swamy Shiva temple, which draws huge crowds at Maha Shivaratri. Go early to beat both the heat and the queues.

8. Marvel at the Kumararama Bhimeswara Temple, Samalkot

Roughly 12–15 km from Kakinada, this is one of the five Pancharama Shiva shrines. Look for the monolithic (Ekasila) Nandi guarding the entrance; the temple shares its architectural style with the one at Draksharamam. It combines easily with Pithapuram in a single morning.

Here is the whole list as a planning cheat sheet (distances are approximate and measured from the city centre):

↔ Table scrolls sideways and up/down on small screens.

Stop Distance Time to allow Timing tip Cost
Kakinada Beach and glass bridge ~5–8 km 1–2 hrs Sunrise or late afternoon Free
Vakalapudi Lighthouse ~10 km 1 hr Book a slot on lighthouse.nic.in Small ticket (see portal)
Hope Island Boat from the coast, 45–60 min each way Half day Dry months, calm weather Boat fare: confirm at the jetty
Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary ~18–22 km 3–4 hrs with a boat ride 9 AM–5 PM; one weekly closure Small entry fee plus boat fare
Bhavanarayana Swamy Temple, Sarpavaram ~5 km 45 min Early morning or evening Free
Uppada Beach and weavers ~15–20 km 2–3 hrs Morning or late afternoon Free; sarees from a few thousand rupees
Pithapuram temples ~20 km 1.5 hrs Early morning Free
Samalkot Bhimeswara Temple ~12–15 km 1 hr Morning Free

If I had three days, I would do it like this. Day one: sunrise at the beach, a veg feast at Subbayya Gari Hotel, Sarpavaram in the afternoon and Kaja shopping at dusk. Day two: Coringa first thing, Hope Island if boats are running. Day three: Uppada’s weavers and beach, then Samalkot and Pithapuram on the way back. Carry some cash, sunscreen and mosquito repellent, and keep a little time free for the boat schedules to behave.

Food & Dining

Kakinada Special Kaja Kakinada District In Andhra Pradesh

Honest take from the road: much of what gets billed as “Kakinada food” is classic coastal Andhra cooking, which is great news because it is hot, tangy and generous. What Kakinada genuinely owns is the Kaja. Ask for “karam takkuva” if you want less heat, and eat seafood where the turnover is high.

Must-Try Local Dishes

  1. Kakinada Kaja – A layered maida pastry, deep-fried and soaked in sugar syrup, with a syrupy core. It dates to 1891, when Chittipeddi Kotaiah opened his sweet shop here. Several shops now use the Kotaiah name (Main Road and Bhanugudi Junction), and locals argue over which is the original, so taste before you buy a big box. Look for the variants Gottam Kaja and Madatha Kaja too.
  2. Butta Bhojanam at Subbayya Gari Hotel – A vegetarian banana-leaf feast of dozens of dishes, served in a leaf basket. It began as a hotel mess in 1950 and settled at what is now Subbayya Gari Junction in 1955. Several outlets on the same stretch trade on the name, so check the signboard.
  3. Royyala Pulusu (Prawn Curry) – Prawns simmered in a tangy tamarind gravy with red chillies and curry leaves. (“Chemmeen”, which you may see in older guides, is the Malayalam word; Telugu uses royyalu.)
  4. Chepala Pulusu (Fish Curry) – Fresh catch in a sour, spicy tamarind broth, a coastal staple best eaten with rice.
  5. Gongura Pachadi – A tart chutney of sorrel leaves and red chillies, the flavour Andhra is most proud of.
  6. Avakaya (Mango Pickle) – The signature Andhra raw-mango pickle with mustard, chilli and oil; a little goes a very long way.
  7. Pesarattu – Crisp green gram crepes, usually served with ginger chutney; a great breakfast.
  8. Pulihora (Tamarind Rice) – Rice tossed in a tamarind-and-spice mix with peanuts and curry leaves, common at festivals and temples.
  9. Pootharekulu – A paper-thin rice-starch sweet from nearby Atreyapuram (GI-tagged in 2023), usually filled with jaggery or sugar and dry fruits. Kakinada sweet shops stock it.

A quick guide for the hungry:

Craving Where to go Notes and price
Kaja and sweets Kotaiah Sweets, Main Road (Kotaiah’s Complex) and Bhanugudi Junction Shops generally open around 8:30 AM. Online listings price Kaja at roughly ₹245–260 for 400 g
A big veg feast Subbayya Gari Hotel, Subbayya Gari Junction, Rama Rao Peta Vegetarian only, lunch and dinner. Rates vary by outlet and meal type; the Vijayawada branch quoted ₹170 and ₹260 for regular and special meals in 2023, so expect a similar ballpark
Hotel dining Grand Kakinada by GRT, Svenska Design Hotel, Paradigm Sarovar Portico Multi-cuisine restaurants and reliable hygiene; pricier than local messes

Shopping

Uppada Jamdani Sarees In Kakinada District In Andhra Pradesh

Shopping in Kakinada is about edible souvenirs and handloom, not malls, though there is SRMT Mall if you want air conditioning and a cinema. Main Road and Bhanugudi Junction are where the sweet shops and everyday retail cluster, and the best sarees are woven in Uppada, a short drive away. For handloom, look for the GI or India Handloom Brand tag; cooperative showrooms usually keep fixed prices, while private shops often leave room for polite bargaining. Skip coral and shell trinkets: trade in corals is restricted under India’s wildlife laws and harms reefs.

Popular Things to Buy

  • Uppada Jamdani Saree – A lightweight silk saree woven in Uppada, GI-registered and prized for its diagonal floral and geometric motifs.
  • Kakinada Kaja – The city’s sweet, best bought from the Kotaiah Sweets shops in boxes you can carry home.
  • Pootharekulu – The rice-paper sweet from Atreyapuram, sold boxed so it survives the journey.
  • Mamidi Tandra (Mango Jelly) – An Atreyapuram specialty, usually found around mango season.
  • Andhra Pickles and Podis – Avakaya, gongura and spice powders; buy sealed, labelled jars from reputed shops.

Item Where to buy Indicative price Buyer’s tip
Kakinada Kaja Kotaiah Sweets (Main Road, Bhanugudi Junction) ~₹245–260 per 400 g (online listings) Taste first; several shops use the Kotaiah name
Uppada Jamdani saree Weavers’ cooperative societies and showrooms in Uppada and Kothapalli; Kakinada saree shops A few thousand rupees to well over ₹1 lakh for heavy silk and zari (indicative) Look for the GI or India Handloom Brand tag; ask how many days the weave took
Pootharekulu Kakinada sweet shops; Atreyapuram (~65–75 km) Varies by filling and box size Only Atreyapuram’s version carries the GI tag
Mamidi Tandra Atreyapuram Varies Seasonal; check it’s fresh

Nearby Attractions

Uppada Beach Kakinada District In Andhra Pradesh

Kakinada makes a superb base for day trips, and most of the best ones are temples or Godavari-delta villages. Distances below are approximate road distances; sources vary a little, so allow some buffer.

↔ Table scrolls sideways and up/down on small screens.

Place Distance from Kakinada Why go Tip
Draksharamam (Bhimeswara Swamy Temple) ~30 km (about 1 hr) One of the five Pancharama Kshetras, with Chola–Chalukya architecture; sometimes called Dakshina Kashi Near Ramachandrapuram; dress modestly and go in the morning
Annavaram (Sri Veera Venkata Satyanarayana Swamy Temple) ~60 km (about 1.5 hrs) Hilltop temple on Ratnagiri and one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the region Go early; auspicious days and weekends get very crowded
Atreyapuram and Ryali (Konaseema) ~65–75 km (about 2 hrs) Home of GI-tagged Pootharekulu, plus Ryali’s Jaganmohini Keshava Swamy Temple Buy sweets fresh at the source and combine with a Konaseema backwater drive
Rajahmundry (Rajamahendravaram) ~60 km (1.5–2 hrs) Godavari riverfront, Pushkar Ghat, Dowleswaram Barrage and an ISKCON temple Handy stop if you are flying into RJA

Temple-circuit tip: Samalkot, Pithapuram and Annavaram fit into one long day with a cab. A hotel-arranged half-day circuit covering Annavaram and Pithapuram has been listed at ₹3,500 (sedan) to ₹5,000 (premium SUV) for up to four guests, which is a handy benchmark when you negotiate with a local driver.

Travel Options

Railway Station Kakinada District In Andhra Pradesh

By Road / Car / Bike

Kakinada is well connected by road, and the coastal NH 216 runs through the city (Bhanugudi Junction sits right on it). From Hyderabad, the usual route is NH 65 to Vijayawada and then NH 16 east. Plan on the following:

↔ Table scrolls sideways and up/down on small screens.

From Road distance Typical drive Notes
Rajahmundry ~60 km 1.5–2 hrs Easiest approach if you fly into RJA; a taxi typically costs about ₹1,100–1,400
Visakhapatnam ~150–165 km 3–3.5 hrs Along the NH 16 coastal corridor
Vijayawada ~215–230 km 4.5–5.5 hrs Via Eluru and Rajahmundry
Hyderabad ~500–600 km (depends on route) 9–11 hrs NH 65 to Vijayawada, then NH 16 east

If you rent a car, hire a driver for the Coringa, Hope Island and Uppada runs, since parking near the jetties and temples is tight. On a two-wheeler, wear a helmet, carry your licence and avoid riding at night or in the rain.

By Train

Kakinada has two stations: Kakinada Town (CCT) and Kakinada Port (COA). Both sit on the Samalkot–Kakinada branch line, not on the Howrah–Chennai main line itself; the main-line interchange is Samalkot Junction (SLO), about 12–15 km away, which many long-distance trains serve. Port station’s current building opened on 26 December 2011. Check current days and timings on IRCTC or NTES before you book.

Train Route Notes
12737/12738 Gowthami Express Kakinada Port – Lingampalli (Hyderabad) via Samalkot, Rajahmundry, Eluru, Kazipet and Secunderabad Daily; the Kakinada Port departure is around 19:15 in the published timetable; an overnight run of roughly 10–11 hrs

12755/12756 Express Kakinada Port – Bhavnagar Terminus Reaches Vijayawada in roughly 3 hrs
17221/17222 Express Kakinada Port – Mumbai LTT Long haul; the LTT-bound direction runs on limited days
17205/17206 Express Kakinada Port – Sainagar Shirdi Useful for Shirdi pilgrims

17267/17268 MEMU Kakinada Port – Visakhapatnam (unreserved) Early morning from Kakinada (~04:55 at Kakinada Town), return arrives in the evening

Fares start low: Rajahmundry to Kakinada is about ₹120 in unreserved class, with reserved classes costing more. I could not find a direct Delhi–Kakinada train, so for Delhi and the north change at Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam or Samalkot.

By Air

The nearest airport is Rajahmundry Airport (RJA) at Madhurapudi, about 60 km and 1.5–2 hours from Kakinada by road and roughly 18 km north of Rajahmundry city. It handles domestic flights only. IndiGo is the main operator, with routes to Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai, and some sources also list Star Air and Alliance Air; schedules change, so check the airline apps. Prepaid taxi counters operate at arrivals, and app cabs also serve the airport. Agree the fare before you set off; the Rajahmundry–Kakinada run typically costs ₹1,100–1,400. For wider choice of flights, Visakhapatnam Airport (VTZ) is about 150–165 km (3–3.5 hrs) away.

By Bus

APSRTC and private operators run frequent buses to Kakinada. From Vijayawada, expect roughly 5 hours with dozens of departures daily, starting very early in the morning and running until late night. Hyderabad services take around 10–11 hours and are mostly overnight sleepers. Visakhapatnam is about 3–4 hours away. Book through the APSRTC website or apps such as redBus and AbhiBus. In town, autos and app cabs are the norm; coverage of Ola, Uber and Rapido varies, so check in the app and keep small change for autos.

Auto-rickshaws and app-based cabs are the norm. For Coringa, Hope Island, Uppada and the temples, hire a cab for the day; hotel-arranged half-day temple circuits have been listed at ₹3,500–5,000 per vehicle, a useful benchmark when you bargain.

Are ATMs and cash services easily accessible?
Yes, in the city. You will find ATMs near the stations, bus station and Main Road, but carry cash for boats, small stalls and rural stops.

Is Kakinada safe for solo female travelers?
The city is generally comfortable. Use reputable cabs, avoid isolated beaches after dark, and keep valuables secure. In an emergency call 112, and the women’s helpline is 1091.

Where can I get clean drinking water?
Bottled water is sold everywhere and most hotels provide filtered water. Public tap water is not recommended for drinking.

What are the nearest beaches and are they tourist-friendly?
Kakinada Beach is in the city and Uppada Beach is about 15–20 km away; both are quiet with basic facilities. Hope Island is reached by boat and has almost no facilities, so carry water and food and avoid overnight stays. Currents can be strong, so be cautious about swimming.

Do I need any special permission to visit the port area?
Yes. Kakinada Deep Water Port is a working cargo port run by Kakinada Seaports Ltd, so entry is restricted to authorised persons. You can see the port from the beach or on the boat to Hope Island, and the Vakalapudi Lighthouse nearby is a separate ticketed attraction.
