East Godavari Travel Guide: Konaseema, Coringa & More

Rail-cum-Road Bridge on Godavari River

Hey fellow traveler, if you want a slow, green, coconut-scented break, East Godavari is it. This is the Godavari delta in Andhra Pradesh: paddy fields, canals, riverside temples, mangrove creeks and the backwater islands of Konaseema, all within a couple of hours of Rajahmundry.

One thing I wish someone had told me before my first trip: since the 2022 district reorganisation, the old East Godavari region is split into three districts. East Godavari proper is headquartered at Rajamahendravaram (Rajahmundry), Kakinada has its own district (home of Coringa), and Konaseema (Amalapuram, Dindi, Antarvedi) is another. When locals and travel sites say "East Godavari trip," they usually mean the whole delta, and that is how this guide treats it. Rajahmundry is the best base, Kakinada is your second.

History

Kondapalli Fort In East Godavari

This delta was the heart of the Vengi region, ruled by the Eastern Chalukyas from the 7th century onward. Rajamahendravaram itself is traditionally credited to the 11th-century king Raja Raja Narendra, and it is where the poet Nannaya began the Telugu Mahabharata, which is why Rajahmundry is called the cultural capital of Andhra. Later the area passed through Kakatiya, Reddy, Gajapati and Qutb Shahi rule, then Mughal and Nizam control, before the Northern Circars came under the British in the 1760s.

The British story here is about water. Sir Arthur Cotton's Dowleswaram anicut (barrage), completed around 1852, tamed the Godavari and turned the delta into the rice bowl of the south. Kakinada (Cocanada) grew as a port for grain and jute. Fun trivia: tiny Yanam, a former French enclave now part of Puducherry, sits right in the middle of the delta, about 30 km from Kakinada.

Best Time to Visit

Polluru Waterfalls in the dense forests near Maredumilli, Andhra Pradesh

Go between October and March. November to February is the sweet spot: pleasant days, cooler mornings on the water and good birding. Avoid April to June, when Rajahmundry gets seriously hot (40 °C is common), and July to September, when the Godavari floods and heavy rain disrupts boating.

Why This is the Best Time

Boat rides, mangrove walks and temple-hopping are all comfortable in winter. One honest caveat from experience: October to early December is also cyclone season on the Bay of Bengal coast, so check the forecast before you book non-refundable stays. Planning far ahead? The Godavari Pushkaralu, a huge river festival, is expected in 2027, so expect big crowds and hotels filling up at Rajahmundry.

Here is how I would spend three days. Day 1 Rajahmundry (ghats, Dowleswaram), Day 2 Kakinada side (Coringa, Uppada, Draksharamam), Day 3 Konaseema (Dindi backwaters, Antarvedi). Distances are approximate road distances, so keep a buffer for village roads.

Food & Dining

Andhra Pradesh - Pesarattu

East Godavari's culinary landscape is a vibrant mix of river-side flavors, coastal bounty, and earthy Andhra staples. Visitors will find hearty breakfasts, fiery seafood, tangy greens, and celebrated sweets that reflect the district's fertile plains and long shoreline. Heads-up: the food is spicy by default, so ask for "less karam" (less spice) if you are not used to it.

Must-Try Local Dishes

  1. Pesarattu – A crisp, green-gram dosa served hot with ginger-chili chutney, popular for breakfast and as a street-food snack.
  2. Ulavacharu – A nourishing horse-gram soup simmered with tamarind, pepper and curry leaves, often enjoyed with rice.
  3. Chepala Pulusu – Tender river fish cooked in a tangy tamarind-based gravy with mustard seeds and red chilies, embodying the coastal palate.
  4. Royyala Vepudu – Spicy prawn fry tossed with curry leaves, red chilies and a hint of lemon, a favorite seaside appetizer.
  5. Pulasa – The prized Godavari hilsa-type fish, a seasonal delicacy caught during the monsoon floods (around July–September) and priced very high. Rare outside that season.
  6. Gongura Mamsam – Mutton stewed with sour gongura (sorrel) leaves, delivering a distinctive tangy heat.
  7. Mamidikaya Pappu – A seasonal lentil stew enriched with raw mango, balancing sourness with the earthy flavor of toor dal.
  8. Kakinada Kaja – A flaky, syrup-soaked sweet made from wheat flour, crisp outside and juicy inside. Buy it fresh in Kakinada.
  9. Pootharekulu – Paper-thin sheets of rice starch layered with sugar or jaggery and ghee, from the Atreyapuram area of Konaseema. A signature sweet of the region.

Nearby Attractions

Yanam (Puducherry)

Once you have covered the main list, these are easy add-ons. Yanam (about 30 km from Kakinada) is a former French enclave with colonial-era buildings and a very different vibe. Hope Island, the sand spit that shelters Kakinada Bay, is reached by boat from Kakinada and is a known nesting area for olive ridley turtles. Konaseema's villages around Amalapuram are good for slow drives through coconut country. Visakhapatnam is about 190–200 km north if you want to extend the trip toward Araku and the Eastern Ghats.

Travel Options

East Godavari In Andhra Pradesh

The easiest hubs are Rajahmundry (rail, air, bus) and Kakinada (rail, bus). Here is the quick comparison before the details.

FromBy roadBy trainBy air
HyderabadAbout 430 km to Rajahmundry, 8–9 hrsOvernight express trains, roughly 8–10 hrsDirect flights to RJA
VisakhapatnamAbout 190–200 km, 4–5 hrsFrequent trains, about 3–4 hrsNot needed

Rajahmundry to KakinadaAbout 60 km, 1.5 hrsVia Samalkot JunctionRJA to Kakinada about 60 km

By Road / Car / Bike

From Hyderabad, take NH65 to Vijayawada (about 275 km), then NH16 east to Rajahmundry (about 150 km), roughly 430 km in total and 8 to 9 hours with a couple of stops. These are good highways, but they are tolled, so keep FASTag recharged. From Rajahmundry to Kakinada it is about 60 km. If you are riding a bike, plan breaks every 150 km, and carry rain gear from June to September.

By Train

Rajahmundry (RJY) is on the Howrah–Chennai main line, so many mail and express trains halt there, including the Godavari Express between Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam. Kakinada Town (CCT) and Kakinada Port (COA) are on a branch line off Samalkot Junction, and the Gautami Express links Hyderabad with Kakinada. Book on IRCTC and check running status on NTES, and compare trains because timings change. Arriving 30 minutes before departure is sensible.

By Air

Rajahmundry Airport (IATA: RJA), at Madhurapudi, is about 18 km from Rajahmundry city centre and roughly 60 km by road from Kakinada. Prepaid taxis, app cabs and APSRTC buses operate from the airport, and flights connect to major cities, though airlines and schedules change, so check current listings. The next big alternative is Visakhapatnam Airport (VTZ), about 190–200 km north.

By Bus

APSRTC and private operators run overnight A/C and sleeper buses from Hyderabad (about 10–11 hours) and frequent services from Vijayawada (about 4 hours) and Visakhapatnam. Book via the APSRTC website or apps like RedBus and AbhiBus. Buses are cheap and reliable, but overnight roads can be bumpy, so keep a neck pillow handy.

Accommodation

Every property below is an established, operating hotel or resort, listed on major booking platforms. Rates are indicative nightly ranges (they swing a lot with weekends, festivals and season), so always check live prices before you book.

Traveler's tip: stay one night in Dindi rather than rushing Konaseema as a day trip. The mornings on the water are the best part of the whole region. Also, the Forest Department offers eco-tourism rooms at Coringa, which you can book through its official portal if you want to wake up beside the mangroves.

Facilities & Information

District Collector Office In West Godavari

Rajahmundry and Kakinada are well connected by NH16, the Howrah–Chennai railway line and Rajahmundry Airport. Both towns have reliable electricity, water, 4G/5G coverage from Airtel, Jio and Vi, banks, ATMs and basic services. Once you leave for Konaseema villages and mangrove areas, mobile signal gets patchy, so carry cash and download offline maps.

Rajahmundry for ease of transport and hotels, Kakinada if Coringa is your priority, and Dindi for a night on the backwaters.

Is there reliable internet for remote work?
Yes in Rajahmundry and Kakinada; many hotels offer Wi-Fi. Expect patchy signal in villages and mangrove areas.

What is the best way to reach from Hyderabad?
Fly to Rajahmundry (RJA) if time matters, take an overnight train or bus for budget travel, or drive about 8 to 9 hours via NH65 and NH16.

The region is generally considered welcoming. Stay in established hotels, use registered taxis, avoid isolated roads after dark and keep 112 handy.

Final word from one traveler to another: slow down, eat everything, take the early boat, and keep your plans flexible around weather and festivals. Prices, timings and schedules change, so reconfirm key details before you go.
