I’d send a fellow traveler to Srikakulam when they want a quieter Andhra: old temples, Buddhist ruins and an empty coast. It sits in the far north-east of Andhra Pradesh, about 100 km north of Visakhapatnam, on the Nagavali river and roughly 8 km inland. The sand is not in town. It’s at Kalingapatnam (about 26–30 km away), where the Vamsadhara river meets the Bay of Bengal.
Come for Arasavalli, one of India’s few ancient Sun temples; Srikurmam, India’s best-known temple to Vishnu as a tortoise; and Salihundam, a hilltop Buddhist site dating from about the 2nd century BCE. Two or three days between November and February covers it. Facts below were checked against official tourism sources and current listings in October 2026, but timings and rates change, so confirm before you go. On a phone, swipe sideways inside any table to see every column.

History
Srikakulam sits in ancient Kalinga. Salihundam’s stupas and monasteries run from about the 2nd century BCE to the 12th century CE. Mukhalingam, inland on the Vamsadhara, was the Eastern Ganga capital Kalinganagara. Kalingapatnam was a real port, with ships from Malaysia and Singapore calling until 1958, and the British-built lighthouse still stands.
Arasavalli’s Sun temple is traditionally dated to the 7th century CE and was rebuilt in 1778 by Elamanchili Pullaji Panthulu. The town was long called Chicacole and was the capital of a Muslim-ruled region of the Northern Circars; a mosque from 1641 survives. Srikakulam became its own district in 1950, carved out of Visakhapatnam.
Best Time to Visit
My rule: go mid-November to February. Skies are clear, mornings are cool and the bird and festival seasons overlap. Temperature ranges below are the Ministry of Tourism’s monthly figures.
| Period | Range (°C) | What to expect | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mid-Nov – Feb | 11–36 | Dry and clear, coolest in Dec–Jan; birds, Ratha Saptami, Maha Shivaratri | Best |
| March | 17–40 | Hot afternoons; sun-rays reach the Arasavalli deity around early-to-mid March | Good if you start early |
| April – June | 20–42 | Very hot; May is the peak | Avoid |
| July – September | 21–36 | Monsoon; July–August are wettest | Avoid |
| October – early Nov | 14–35 | Green and clear, but cyclone season | Possible; check forecasts |
Why This is the Best Time
After the monsoon the paddy and coconut groves are green and the air is clear, so beach walks, the Salihundam hill and temple queues are bearable. Pelicans and painted storks visit Telineelapuram from September to March. Ratha Saptami (late January–February, date shifts yearly) and Maha Shivaratri (February–March) fill Arasavalli and Mukhalingam. Around March and late September–early October, the morning sun reaches the Arasavalli deity’s feet.
One honest caveat: this coast takes cyclones. Titli made landfall near Palasa on 11 October 2018 and hammered Srikakulam’s roads, power and crops. If you travel October–December, watch IMD forecasts and keep bookings flexible.
Things to Do and See
Plan it in three bites: town and temples, a coast-and-Buddhist day, then one longer trip. Distances are from Srikakulam town.
| Place | Distance | Timings | Cost | My take |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arasavalli Sun Temple | 1–2 km east | 6:00 AM–12:30 PM, 3:30–8:00 PM | General darshan free; paid fast-track available | The headline sight. Go at opening on a weekday; Sundays and Ratha Saptami are packed. Dress modestly. |
| Srikurmam Temple | 13–15 km | About 6 AM–8 PM; expect a midday break | Free (special darshan extra) | Vishnu as a tortoise; old and atmospheric. Only 12.5 km from Arasavalli, so pair them. |
| Salihundam | 18 km | Daylight; confirm museum hours locally | Free or nominal | Hilltop stupas, chaitya halls and a small museum. Carry water; go in the cool hours. |
| Kalingapatnam Beach | 26–30 km | Open access; best late afternoon | Free | Golden sand, river mouth and a 31 m lighthouse, 5 km from Salihundam. Don’t count on lifeguards. |
| Srikakulam town | – | Any time | Free | An hour is plenty: Nagavali riverfront, the 1641 mosque and the old Umarudra Koteswara Shiva temple. |
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arasavalli at 6:00 AM, breakfast, Srikurmam, rest through the midday break, back to Arasavalli after 3:30 PM. |
| Day 2 | Salihundam in the morning, then Kalingapatnam for lunch, beach and sunset. A hired cab or bike makes this day easy. |
| Day 3 | Mukhalingam (about 48 km, 1.5 hours each way) or Ponduru (about 30 km) for khadi weaving. |
Food & Dining
Uttarandhra cooking leans a little sweeter than the rest of Andhra, and the seafood is the draw. Eat at simple local places and ask for the catch of the day. Seafood is usually priced by weight, so confirm before ordering.
Must-Try Local Dishes
- Chepala Pulusu – tangy tamarind fish curry, best with rice and a fresh catch.
- Royyala Vepudu – chilli-garlic prawn fry from the coast.
- Kodi Kura – spicy Andhra chicken curry.
- Pesarattu – green-gram crepe with ginger chutney, a classic breakfast.
- Pulusu Uppindi – savoury rice-flour porridge with peanuts and tamarind, a regional breakfast.
- Pulihora – tamarind rice, a temple and festival staple.
- Gongura Pachadi – sorrel-leaf chutney with a sour kick.
- Bobbattu – sweet stuffed flatbread.
- Ariselu – fried rice-flour and jaggery sweet, big at festivals.
- Mandasa Palakova – the traditional milk sweet of Mandasa.
The APTDC resorts at Kalingapatnam and Baruva have restaurants. Mukhalingam has very little, so pack snacks and water.
Shopping
Skip the malls. The busiest strip is GT Road and the Chinna Bazar area, but the best buys are at the source. Bargain politely in markets; expect fixed prices at Khadi and government outlets.
Popular Things to Buy
- Ponduru Khadi (Sanna Khadi) – hand-spun, hand-woven cotton from Ponduru (about 30 km), GI-tagged in December 2025 and once praised by Gandhi.
- Budithi bell-metal and brass craft – GI-tagged kitchenware and decor. It’s heavy, so plan your luggage.
- Palasa cashews – Palasa is Andhra’s biggest cashew-kernel market. Buy sealed packs and check weight and price.
- Mandasa Palakova – fresh milk sweet; eat it within a few days.
- Ariselu and Bobbattu – festival sweets from local sweet shops.
Travel Options
| From | Distance by road | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Visakhapatnam city | About 100 km | 2–3 hours |
| Bhogapuram airport | 60–90 km (sources vary) | 1.5–2 hours |
| Palasa | 75–80 km | About 1.5 hours |
| Berhampur (Odisha) | About 158 km | About 3 hours |
| Bhubaneswar | 300–325 km | About 6 hours |
| Vijayawada | 430–455 km | 7.5–8 hours |
| Hyderabad | 730–830 km | 13–15 hours by bus |
By Road / Car / Bike
From Visakhapatnam, take NH16 north: about 100 km, 2–3 hours depending on traffic. From Hyderabad, take NH65 to Vijayawada, then NH16 north, and plan a long day. NH16 has regular fuel stops, eateries and toll plazas, so keep a FASTag handy. Start early to dodge heat and trucks. For the coastal day I’d hire a car with a driver or a two-wheeler, since waiting for buses eats time.
By Train
Srikakulam Road (CHE) is on the Howrah–Chennai main line at Amadalavalasa, about 8–15 km from town. APSRTC buses run roughly every 20 minutes to the town, and autos are available. Trains that stop here include the Coromandel Express (12841/12842), Konark Express (11019/11020), Visakha Express (17015/17016) and Howrah–Yesvantpur Superfast (22831/22832), plus MEMU locals to Palasa and Visakhapatnam. Visakhapatnam to Srikakulam Road takes about 2–3 hours. Check live schedules on IRCTC or NTES and book ahead in festival season.
By Air
This changed recently. Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram opened for commercial flights on 17 August 2026 and now serves Visakhapatnam. The VTZ code moved with it, and scheduled flights left the old city airport. Reported routes include Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Vijayawada, plus international services such as Singapore and Abu Dhabi. It is about 45 km from Visakhapatnam city and roughly 60–90 km from Srikakulam. Pre-book a cab, as online guides still quote the old airport’s 115–120 km.
By Bus
APSRTC and private operators serve Srikakulam from Visakhapatnam (2–3 hours; fares from about ₹125 on non-AC, with services from around 1 AM to about 10 PM), Vijayawada, Hyderabad (13–15 hours; roughly ₹700–1,300 depending on coach) and Berhampur (about 3–3.5 hours). Buses to Srikurmam and Mukhalingam leave from the Srikakulam bus stand. Book online via APSRTC or the usual apps.
Accommodation
Srikakulam’s hotels are modest: clean, no-frills rooms rather than luxury. Every property below is a real, currently listed place, checked on Tripadvisor, ZenHotels and Trivago and the AP district tourism site in October 2026. I can’t vouch from personal stays, so treat it as a shortlist and read recent reviews. Rates are indicative aggregator “from” prices (about $17–55 per night) converted roughly to rupees; festival weekends cost more.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the nearest airport, and how do I reach Srikakulam?
Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram (code VTZ) has handled Visakhapatnam’s flights since 17 August 2026. Take a pre-booked cab, about 60–90 km and 1.5–2 hours.
When should I visit?
Mid-November to February is ideal. October–early November is possible but cyclone-prone; April–September is hot or wet.
Can I do Srikakulam as a day trip from Visakhapatnam?
Barely. It’s 2–3 hours each way, so you’d manage Arasavalli and Srikurmam at best. Stay at least one night.
Is it safe to travel alone, especially at night?
Treat it like any small Indian town: use registered taxis or autos, keep valuables secure, avoid empty beach roads after dark, and call 112 or 100 if needed.
Are there reliable medical facilities?
Yes. RIMS Government General Hospital is the main public option; Medicover and KIMS Sai Seshadri are private. Dial 108 for an ambulance.
Which network works best, and how do I get a SIM?
I can’t verify coverage maps, so check operators’ maps before you go. Buy a SIM at an official operator store with ID; foreign visitors need a passport and visa copies.
