Let me be straight with you, fellow traveller: Eluru (spelled Ellore in old records) is a town most people blur past on NH 16 between Vijayawada and Rajahmundry. That is a mistake. It is the headquarters of Eluru district, created on 4 April 2022 out of the old West Godavari and Krishna districts (West Godavari's own headquarters is now Bhimavaram, so any older guide that says otherwise is out of date). The city sits on the Tammileru river, roughly midway between the Krishna and Godavari and about 50 km inland from the Bay of Bengal. It earned the nickname “City of Carpets” for its hand-knotted woollen rugs, and within an hour or so you can reach Kolleru Lake’s wetlands, an ancient Buddhist cave site and the much-loved Dwaraka Tirumala temple, sometimes called Chinna Tirupati.
This is a working town of about 2.1 lakh people (2011 census), not a polished tourist hub. Come for the crafts, the history and the food, keep your expectations honest, and you will enjoy it. Here is the cheat sheet I would hand a friend before the trip.

History
Eluru’s story is older than most travellers expect. The area was part of the ancient Vengi region, whose capital stood at what is now Pedavegi village, only about 11 km from the city. Rulers here included the Salankayanas (3rd–5th century CE), the Vishnukundinas and then the Eastern Chalukyas, who held Vengi from the 7th century until around 1130 CE, when it merged into the Chola realm. Later the region passed through Kakatiya and Kalinga hands, the Gajapatis, Krishnadevaraya (1515), the Qutb Shahis, the Mughals and the Nizam, before French and then British control in the 18th century. Under the British, Eluru was a military station and a seat of administration for the Northern Circars.
The modern chapters are worth knowing too. Eluru became a municipality in 1866 and a municipal corporation in 2005. Mahatma Gandhi inaugurated a National College here in 1921, and when West Godavari district was formed in 1925, Eluru became its headquarters, a role it held until the 2022 reorganisation.
| Period | What happened |
|---|---|
| 3rd–5th century CE | Salankayanas rule the Vengi region (Eluru area) |
| Late 5th–early 7th century | Vishnukundinas take over coastal Andhra |
| 7th century–c. 1130 | Eastern Chalukyas of Vengi; capital at Vengi (Pedavegi), later moved to Rajahmundry |
| 13th–15th century | Kakatiya and Kalinga rule (to 1471), then the Gajapatis |
| 1515 | Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara captures the area |
| c. 1565–1724 | Qutb Shahi rule, then the Mughals (from 1687) |
| 1724–1759 | Nizam’s dominion, then the French, then the British |
| 1866 | Eluru municipality constituted |
| 1921 | Gandhi inaugurates the National College in Eluru |
| 1925 | Eluru becomes headquarters of the new West Godavari district |
| 2005 | Upgraded to a municipal corporation |
| 2022 | Eluru becomes headquarters of the new Eluru district |
Best Time to Visit
Go between November and February. Days are warm but bearable (highs around 29–32 °C), mornings are cooler (lows around 19–21 °C), and it barely rains. This is also the main season for migratory birds at Kolleru, which arrive from roughly October to March.
| Months | Typical high / low | Monthly rain | My verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nov – Feb | 29–32 °C / 19–21 °C | 3–40 mm | Best window. Comfortable sightseeing, and the Kolleru bird season is on. |
| March | About 35 °C / 23 °C | About 6 mm | Fine for mornings; afternoons get hot. Good shoulder month. |
| April – May | 37–39 °C / 26–28 °C | 14–40 mm | Hottest stretch; it can cross 40 °C. Skip it unless you have no choice. |
| June – September | 32–37 °C / 25–27 °C | 123–229 mm | Humid, with heavy monsoon rain. Low-lying and lake areas can flood. |
| October | About 31 °C / 24 °C | About 166 mm | Still wet, and the Bay of Bengal cyclone season runs October to December. Check the forecast. |
Why This is the Best Time
Eluru gets about 992 mm of rain a year, and most of it falls from June to October, with July the wettest. By November the humidity eases, the skies clear and the lake-side roads are passable. Dwaraka Tirumala and Guntupalli involve a fair bit of walking and stair-climbing, so cooler weather makes a real difference. One note for your records: older posts suggest late September–October as a good time. I would not rely on that, since it is still the wet season and cyclone-prone on this coast. (Climate figures are long-term averages from climate-data.org, as cited on Wikipedia; real weather varies.)
Things to Do and See
Eluru rewards people who like slow, local travel. The city sights are modest and can be done in a day; the real draws are a short drive away. Here is what I would put on the list, with distances, hours and costs as listed by official tourism pages (always double-check on the day, as timings change).
| Sight | Where / distance | Timings | Entry | Time needed | Why go |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eluru Buddha Park | In the city | Daytime; evenings are pleasant | Free | About 1 hour | A 74 ft Buddha statue in the Abhaya (fearless) pose, standing in the middle of the old Gaja Vallivari Cheruvu tank. |
| Carpet-weaving neighbourhoods | Tangellamudi, Lakshavarapupeta and Sanivarapupeta, in the city | Working hours; mornings are best | Free to look; ask before photographing | 1–2 hours | Watch hand-knotted wool carpets taking shape on vertical looms, then buy straight from the makers. |
| Sultan Quli Masjid and Kotadibba | In the city | Exterior viewing, daytime | Free | 30–45 min | A small mosque said to be about 400 years old, and the old fort mound where Vengi Chalukya inscriptions were found. Modest sites for history fans. |
| Pedavegi (ancient Vengi) | About 11 km | Daytime | Free | 30–60 min | The old capital of the Salankayanas, Vishnukundinas and Eastern Chalukyas. Expect remains of the fortress, including a large well. |
| Kolleru Lake | About 15–20 km | 9 am – 5 pm (official tourism listing) | Free per official listing; boat rides cost extra and vary | 2–4 hours | One of India’s largest freshwater lakes and a Ramsar wetland. Go early for pelicans, storks and ducks. |
| Dwaraka Tirumala (Chinna Tirupati) | About 42 km | 6 am – 9 pm | Free entry; paid special-darshan tickets exist, so check current rates | 2–3 hours | Hilltop Venkateswara temple with a five-storey gopuram. Its Kalyanotsavam festival runs eight days in April–May. |
| Guntupalli Buddhist Complex | About 40 km (near Kamavarapukota) | Daylight hours | Free (official listing) | 1.5–2 hours | Rock-cut caves, a chaitya hall and many stupas, mostly from about 200 BCE to 0. There is a steep stair climb. |
How I would sequence it: spend one day in town (carpet lanes in the morning, Buddha Park and the heritage stops in the afternoon, Pedavegi if you have energy). Give Kolleru a separate early-morning half-day. Dwaraka Tirumala and Guntupalli lie in different directions, so only combine them if you have a full day and a hired car.
An honest note on Kolleru: bird numbers have dropped over the years because of pollution, fish-farming encroachment and habitat loss, though pelicans and painted storks are still seen. Go for the calm and the scenery rather than for a spectacle, and wear sturdy shoes, a hat and sunscreen.
Food & Dining
Eating here means coastal Andhra at its boldest: rice, red chillies, tamarind and plenty of fish. Eluru is a trade centre for Kolleru’s freshwater fish, so seafood and fish dishes are a good bet, and the town’s modest eateries and street stalls do the classics well. I can’t honestly vouch for specific restaurant names from a desk, so my advice is the traveller’s rule: pick busy places full of locals, and ask for the spice level you can handle (Andhra “medium” can be hot).
Must-Try Local Dishes
- Gongura Pachadi – Tangy chutney made from sour gongura (sorrel) leaves with red chillies, garlic and mustard seeds. It is the unofficial flavour of Andhra.
- Pesarattu – Crisp green-gram crepes, usually eaten at breakfast with ginger chutney or upma inside.
- Kodi Kura – Andhra-style chicken curry cooked with red chillies, curry leaves and a little tamarind. Expect heat.
- Chepala Pulusu – Tangy fish stew simmered in tamarind gravy with onions and tomatoes. A good choice here given the lake fishing nearby.
- Royyala Vepudu – Dry-fried prawns tossed with curry leaves, red chillies and a squeeze of lemon.
- Gutti Vankaya Kura – Small brinjals stuffed with a roasted peanut, sesame and spice paste and cooked in gravy. Great with rice or roti.
- Mamidikaya Pulihora – Raw-mango rice with mustard seeds and curry leaves, sour and spicy. It is seasonal, so you will mostly find it in mango season.
- Bobbatlu (Puran Poli) – Sweet flatbread stuffed with chana dal and jaggery, a festival favourite.
- Kobbari Annam – Coconut rice with mustard seeds, curry leaves and roasted peanuts.
- Ulavacharu – Rich horse-gram soup with a tempering of ghee and spices, a hearty regional speciality.
Budget check (ballpark figures, which vary by eatery and season): a simple tiffin breakfast usually costs well under ₹100, and a vegetarian meal at a local restaurant is typically ₹100–200. A non-vegetarian plate or a fish meal tends to run ₹200–400. Stick to bottled or filtered water, and eat freshly cooked food.
Shopping
Shopping in Eluru is really about one thing: carpets. The town has woven hand-knotted wool rugs for centuries, a craft said to have come with weavers from Persia and the Arab world, and Eluru rugs are also called Deccan rugs. The weavers work in the Tangellamudi, Lakshavarapupeta and Sanivarapupeta areas. The classic look is natural shades (white, black, brown and grey) with floral or geometric Indo-Persian patterns. The main commercial areas are R.R. Pet, Powerpet and the Eluru 1-Town area, where you will find everyday textiles, general goods and busy lanes. Bargaining is normal, but be polite and don’t haggle on a weaver’s fair price.
Popular Things to Buy
- Hand-knotted wool carpets and rugs – Eluru’s signature craft. Ask whether a piece is hand-knotted or machine-made, and compare per-square-foot prices at two or three workshops. Genuine hand-knotted rugs vary widely in price by size and knot density.
- Natural-shade rugs – Undyed white, black, brown and grey wool in uniform geometric designs, which suit modern homes.
- Doormats and small rugs – The easy, packable, budget-friendly option; small mats can cost a few hundred rupees.
- Kalamkari fabric – Hand-painted or block-printed cotton. Machilipatnam (about 78 km away) is the classic source, so buy there or from reputable Vijayawada shops.
- Kondapalli wooden toys – Brightly painted figurines made near Vijayawada; look for them in Vijayawada’s handicraft shops.
- Avakaya (mango) and gongura pickles – Buy sealed, labelled jars and wrap them well for the trip home.
- Andhra spice blends – Chilli powders and masalas; Guntur, about 92 km away, is famous for its chillies.
- Incense – Eluru has a long-running incense maker (Ambica Agarbathies, established in 1946), so agarbattis make an inexpensive souvenir.
| Area | What you’ll find | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Tangellamudi, Lakshavarapupeta, Sanivarapupeta | Carpet workshops and weavers | Buy directly from the makers, watch a piece being woven, and ask about shipping for large rugs. |
| R.R. Pet, Powerpet, Eluru 1-Town | Everyday textiles, general goods and the city’s main commercial lanes | Go in the morning; it gets crowded and hot by afternoon. |
| Vijayawada (about 57 km) | Larger handicraft and silk shops, plus Kondapalli toys | Worth a half-day if you want more variety than Eluru offers. |

Travel Options
Eluru sits on NH 16 and the Howrah–Chennai rail corridor, so getting here is easy. Here is the quick comparison before the details. Times and fares are approximate listings from travel planners and will vary, so confirm before you book.
| From | Road distance | By car | By train | By bus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vijayawada | About 57 km | 1–1.5 hours | Frequent, about 1–1.5 hours | About 1–1.5 hours |

| Chennai | About 510 km | 9–10 hours | 7–8.75 hours | 8.5–9.25 hours |
By Road / Car / Bike
NH 16 (part of the Golden Quadrilateral) runs straight through the Eluru region, linking Vijayawada, Rajahmundry and Visakhapatnam. From Hyderabad, take NH 65 to Vijayawada and then NH 16 north-east to Eluru; plan on roughly 6.5–7 hours for about 340 km. From Chennai, follow the NH 16 coastal route via Nellore and Ongole to Vijayawada and on to Eluru, about 510 km and 9–10 hours. Rental cars with drivers are widely available in Vijayawada and Rajahmundry, and fuel and tea stops are plentiful. Inside the city, expect traffic around the old railway-gate junctions, so allow extra time.
By Train
Eluru railway station (code EE) is on the Howrah–Chennai main line, in the Vijayawada division of South Coast Railway, and many long-distance and local trains call here. For local hops, passenger and MEMU services link Vijayawada, Eluru and Rajahmundry. Examples listed by RailYatri include the Vijayawada–Visakhapatnam Passenger (57225, around 09:39 at Eluru), the Visakhapatnam–Vijayawada Passenger (57226, around 15:50) and the Rajahmundry–Vijayawada MEMU (67262, around 05:44). Timings change, so check NTES or IRCTC before travelling. Direct trains to Hyderabad take roughly 5.5–8.5 hours, with fares from about ₹165 in the lowest class, and Chennai takes roughly 7–8.75 hours. Book long-distance tickets early on IRCTC.
By Air
The nearest airport is Vijayawada Airport (VGA) at Gannavaram, about an hour’s drive and roughly 55–60 km away, with flights to cities such as Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru and Delhi (airlines and schedules change, so check current listings). Rajahmundry Airport (RJA) is a decent alternative but is over 100 km away, so it is not the closer option, despite what some older write-ups claim. Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is about 350 km away and is the nearest international gateway. From Vijayawada airport, pre-book a cab or take a bus along NH 16 towards Eluru.
By Bus
Eluru has an Old and a New Bus Station, with APSRTC services to Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad and Chennai, plus private sleeper and Volvo-type coaches on the Hyderabad and Chennai corridors. Rough guide: Vijayawada 1–1.5 hours, Hyderabad 6.5–7 hours (listed fares about ₹189–399) and Chennai 8.5–9.25 hours (listed fares about ₹829–1,150). Once in the city, note that there is no dedicated city bus system; auto-rickshaws are the main local transport, so agree on the fare before you hop in.
Accommodation
I have kept this list strict: only properties that appear on multiple independent booking platforms, and I have dropped the unverified names from the earlier draft. Eluru’s stays are mostly budget to mid-range city hotels and lodges, with no luxury resorts. Aggregators show Eluru hotels starting from around ₹1,500 a night, though rates vary by season, room type and demand. If you want a proper upscale hotel, Vijayawada (about 57 km away) has far more choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most convenient way to travel within Eluru?
Auto-rickshaws are the main option, since the city has no dedicated city bus network. Agree on the fare before you board, or hire a car with a driver for day trips to Kolleru, Dwaraka Tirumala and Guntupalli.
Are there ATMs and banking services for foreign tourists?
ATMs and bank branches are common in the city, and international cards are accepted at many (not all) of them. For foreign-currency exchange, use Vijayawada or a major airport, and carry some rupee cash for local spending.
Is Eluru safe for solo travellers, especially women?
It is an ordinary working Andhra town and visitors generally move around without trouble, but I can’t quote crime statistics. Use normal precautions: avoid isolated spots after dark, keep valuables close, and arrange transport in advance for early-morning trips to Kolleru.
Where should I go for urgent medical help?
Dial 108 for an ambulance or 112 for emergencies. In the city, the District Headquarters Hospital and ASRAM Hospital are the main options, and Vijayawada has bigger hospitals if needed.
How far is the nearest airport and how can I reach it?
Vijayawada Airport (Gannavaram) is the nearest, about 55–60 km and roughly an hour by road. Take a pre-booked cab, or a bus on NH 16. Rajahmundry airport is over 100 km away.
How many days do I need?
Two days is comfortable: one for the city (carpets, Buddha Park, Pedavegi) and one for a trip to Dwaraka Tirumala or Guntupalli. Add a morning for Kolleru if you love birds.
